" Il titolo del brano deriva dall'omonimo piatto cinese a base di verdure, che il cantante Serj Tankian mangia in alcune scene del video. Il testo contiene anche alcune citazioni tratte dalle ultime parole pronunciate da Gesù prima di morire, tra cui «Father, into your hands I commend my spirit» e «Father, why have you forsaken me?».

Originariamente il brano doveva chiamarsi Suicide, e probabilmente il nome Chop Suey! è stato scelto perchè la sua pronuncia è simile a quella di suicide.

In Chop Suey! i System of a Down hanno cercato d’indagare dall’interno, nell’oscurità della psiche, le motivazioni che spingono l’essere umano al suicidio; l’esasperazione, la tristezza e la lacerazione interna sembrano essere i sentimenti prevalenti in questo brano, nonostante il ritmo energico.

Molti, infine, hanno interpretato la canzone come un riferimento a Kurt Cobain, criticando in particolare il giudizio che ingiustamente, secondo il gruppo, è stato dato dai media al suo suicidio. ”
